When it comes to buying toys for babies, you need to consider the fact that they don’t have much co-ordination so won’t initially be able to even hold toys, let alone play with them. For this reason the best baby toys for newborn infants are usually considered to be things like soft teddy bears or bunnies. As the baby gets older, he or she will learn to cuddle baby soft toys.

But there is another category when it comes to the best toys for babies and this is the type that is manufactured specifically to stimulate babies.

Remember that a very young baby will be able to focus on objects that are quite close, but the baby won’t see any detail. So “toys” and mobiles, hung above the crib will give baby something to watch. These should be bright and colorful and easy to see. Crib music boxes are also suitable, because babies listen intently at this age and will pick up all sorts of noises. Just bear in mind that it is the low-pitched sounds that are soothing and that high-pitched sounds are likely to excite a small baby.

The best toys for baby after the first month will encourage a bit more activity. Floor gyms are perfect, because they have hanging parts to look at and start to touch, and often also flashing lights and music. Activity quilts that are visually appealing and have different textures are also a good “toy” for a baby this age.

By the time a baby is three months old, she will probably be able to prop herself up. At this stage she will be able to hold objects, including toys, and will start to reach out to things that move. The best baby toys for an infant of three months will be those that encourage sensory-stimulation. Floor gyms are still good, as are hand-held toys like rattles that make a noise.

By the time baby is four months old you will notice a marked difference in co-ordination skills. He will start to recognize a link between cause and effect. This is the time to introduce activity toys including simple “books” and anything that combines bright colors, lights and sound.

The best toys for babies aged about five months need to be safe but should also capture the baby’s attention. Ideally toys at this stage should be different sizes, different shapes and should provide the opportunity for the infant to explore different textures by feeling different materials.

By the time your baby is six months old, you can introduce toys that will encourage her to crawl as well as those that are intended to get a reaction. Stacking toys, blocks and simple puzzles are also suitable. When you look for the best baby toys for a six month year old, remember that she will be able to sit unsupported at this stage and will be happy to join in any activities that are centered round her. Cause and effect will be real, and she will look for things she drops or items that are taken away from her.

In addition to toys, you will be able to begin playing simple games with your six month old baby, like peek-a-boo.
