There are some beautifully cozy baby sleeping bags on the market right now, in different designs, colors and made from different materials.
The first thing to be aware of is that a sleeping bag for baby is quite different to the kind of sleeping bags that are intended for older children, or made for children and adults to go camping with. Baby sleep bags generally have three openings at the top for the head and arms. This basic design makes the baby sleeping bag safe because the baby then cannot slip under the covers and possibly suffocate. So in a way you are literally “dressing” baby in the bag.
Some of the different designs include pouch sleeping bags for babies which look just like a baby-sized pouch that you slip them into to keep them warm. Another type is the quilted moon bag which often has a zip up the front, making it quick and easy to access your infant when you need to change nappies.
The type of material varies. Some baby sleeping bags are intended for chilly winter weather, and so the material is a little heavier than for baby sleep bags intended for warm summer weather. A winter baby sleeping bag might be lined with fleecy lamb’s wool, which will keep your little one snug as a bug in a rug. There is also quite a lot of choice in terms of organic materials, for example pure cotton or beautifully soft organic jersey cotton. If you are keen on an organic baby sleeping bag, have a look at other organic cotton products, like a baby blanket and other accessories too. Some of these products are printed or dyed with natural, organic dyes, while others are not. But they should meet the relevant national standards that relate to the country of origin. There’s no point in choosing organic otherwise.
Generally baby sleeping bags are an essential must-buy when you are purchasing a first set of newborn baby clothes. They are available in numerous different colors and a variety of fun and funky patterns. This makes it possible (in fact incredibly easy) to match the sleeping bag to the décor of your baby room. Sleeping bags for babies are also available in various sizes, according to age. For example:
- birth to six months
- six to 18 months
- 18 months to three years
By the time your baby is three, you’ll be using some more conventional bed linen in your baby room, a suitable duvet for example. Just remember that for reasons of safety, you must never use a conventional duvet or quilt with baby sleeping bags.
